The Greek sailing season runs roughly from late April to the end of October, and every stretch of it has its own character. The “best” time depends on what you want from the week: warm water and empty coves, lively harbours and nightlife, or the strongest, most exciting winds under sail.
This guide breaks the season down month by month - weather, sea temperature, the famous meltemi wind, crowds and pricing - so you can match your catamaran charter to the trip you actually have in mind.
Late April & May - the quiet opening
Spring is a beautiful, underrated time to sail in Greece. The islands are green, wildflowers are out, and the harbours are calm and uncrowded. Daytime temperatures sit comfortably in the low-to-mid 20s°C, and prices are at their most attractive.
The trade-off is sea temperature - the water is still cool in April (around 17–18°C) and only starts to warm through May. If long swims are central to your holiday, aim for late May onwards. Winds are generally moderate, which makes it a relaxed time for first-timers exploring the Saronic Gulf.
June - arguably the sweet spot
June is many crews’ favourite month. The sea has warmed to a swimmable 22–24°C, the days are long and reliably sunny, and the summer crowds have not yet peaked. The meltemi is usually still light, so crossings in the Cyclades stay comfortable.
It is an ideal month for a balanced week - swimming, island towns and easy sailing - without the intensity of high summer. Book early, though: June fills up fast with families travelling before school holidays.
July & August - high summer
These are the hottest, busiest and most expensive months. Sea temperatures reach 24–26°C, the towns are alive late into the night, and islands like Mykonos and Paros are at their liveliest.
This is also meltemi season. The dry northerly wind can blow hard for days at a time in the central Cyclades, which is thrilling for confident sailors but can mean bumpier crossings. A good captain simply reshapes the route toward sheltered anchorages - one of the biggest advantages of sailing with a crew.
September - the connoisseur’s month
If you can travel outside the school holidays, September is hard to beat. The sea is at its warmest after a summer of sunshine, the meltemi eases, the light turns golden, and the crowds thin noticeably after the first week.
Prices soften, tavernas relax, and the sailing is superb. For many repeat guests, September is the single best month to charter a catamaran in Greece.
October - the gentle close
Early October still offers warm seas and pleasant days, with a calm, end-of-season feel and low prices. By mid-to-late October the weather becomes less settled and the season winds down. It is a lovely, peaceful time for a shorter trip in the sheltered Saronic.
A note on the meltemi
The meltemi is a strong, dry north wind that blows across the Aegean mainly in July and August. It brings clear skies and clean air, but it also shapes how a week unfolds. On a crewed charter, your captain reads the forecast daily and routes you through protected waters - so the wind becomes a feature of the trip, not a problem.
